Calling all children’s mental health advocates! On Thursday, May 8, San Francisco-based company, Social Code will join 1,100 communities across the country in celebrating the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day to raise awareness about the importance of positive mental health from birth.

The theme for this year is: Inspiring Resilience, Creating Hope.

Here’s how you can show your support for young people and take part in this celebration:

  • Share your own inspiring stories of resilience and peer support on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Tumblr using the hashtag #IGetSupportFrom
  • Submit photos, links and videos on social media, using the hashtag #HeroesofHope
  • Support and spread the word about Code Blue, Social Code’s crowdfunding campaign to build a free app to help young people experiencing depression

This year, the national Awareness Day launch event—taking place in Washington, DC and featuring Honorary Chairperson Chiara de Blasio, the 19-year-old daughter of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio —highlights the unique needs of young adults ages 16—25 with mental health challenges. Young people can build resilience to these challenges through peer support, particularly among the four life domains of housing, education, employment, and health care access.

The team here at Social Code will be actively taking part in online conversation regarding this important event. We will also be reaching out to schools, newspapers and communities in our local San Francisco bay area to help raise awareness for children’s mental health. Awareness Day is SAMHSA’s annual observance of the importance of caring for every child’s mental health—and it provides an opportunity to celebrate the positive impact we can have on the lives of young people. We hope that you are able to join us and take part in the celebration. For more information, please contact Rin (Rin @ Socialcode.io).
